What does mobile responsiveness mean, and does my website need it?

Responsive design is increasingly being used more as a catch-phrase of necessity when it comes to designing, developing and creating new websites. It seems to have lost it’s actual meaning and the associated reason why it is more important than ever to address when designing your new website.
So what exactly is responsive design, and why is it so important to my site?
Responsive design is a term used to describe how your website reacts when a variety of different devices with different screen sizes access it.
Does it do nothing? Does the text show up as itsy bitsy letters? Does a horizontal scrollbar appear (cardinal sin by the way)? Do images fall off the edges of the screen? All these things describe a website that isn’t responsive.
A responsive site will resize elements of your website so that it is easy to use by the user. Menu items are clear and easy to press on. Images are contained within view. Text is legible (not too large, and not too small). And you never have to scroll sideways!
Moving on, so why would your site need it? Is it really that important?

It’s overwhelming to think that mobile traffic on the internet has surpassed the desktop. What that means is, there are more mobile devices accessing the internet than desktop devices (that includes laptops!).
So ask yourself again – do I really need my site to be responsive? Damn right you do!
According to Smart Insights, 48% of consumers start mobile research with a search engine – being found on Google is one thing, but being able to properly portray who you are, and what you do through your website on a mobile platform is essential.
Further, Google says 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing, with 40% then visiting a competitor’s site instead! That’s quite literally customers walking out your door and into your competitor’s next door!
